Andrea Mazzola
Criminalist, LAPD
Andrea Mazzola, an LAPD criminalist, testified over four days in late April 1995 about evidence collection, documentation, chain of custody, and her earlier Griffen-hearing testimony; she also appeared as a witness in the civil trial in December 1996. On cross-examination, defense attorney Peter Neufeld used photographs, field notes, prior testimony, and videotape to challenge her procedures and differing accounts of who collected Rockingham blood drops and how evidence was handled. Mazzola acknowledged that her prior sworn testimony that she had initialed every coin envelope for the blood stains she collected rested on a mistaken assumption and was wrong, while the demonstration video showed her hand contacting dirty concrete before she handled tools and material and showed swatches falling.
