Prosecutor Hank Goldberg walked her through evidence collection procedures on direct, but defense attorney Peter Neufeld's cross-examination systematically exposed contradictions in her testimony — including a prior sworn statement that she had personally collected all blood samples at Rockingham, which she now attributed to others, and an admission that her August 1994 testimony about initialing every coin envelope was based on a mistaken belief. The prosecution's own demonstration video added to the problems, showing Mazzola committing repeated contamination errors, and Neufeld caught her changing testimony about the Bundy gate and gloves after a lunch recess. Her testimony became a centerpiece of the defense's argument that LAPD evidence handling was fundamentally unreliable.
