Det. Kelly Mulldorfer, an LAPD detective, testified as a defense witness on July 20, 1995, in direct, cross, redirect, and recross examinations concerning the Ford Bronco's storage at Viertel's impound lot. She testified that no access log was kept for the Bronco, while cross-examination established that, apart from Meraz's theft, the vehicle was properly secured there. Before her testimony, defense counsel Barry Scheck proffered that an existing logging system had not been followed and sought to use her account of Dennis Fung's July 6 visit for impeachment; prosecutor Christopher Darden disputed the hearsay foundation for the access claim and whether Fung's account was inconsistent.
