Court remarks about power surge

Date: Friday, May 12, 1995 • Utterances: 1
Judge Ito briefly explains to the jury that a power surge hit the county power plant downtown, triggering an automatic shutdown of the air conditioning and heating system. He reassures the jury that the system is back online manually and they will proceed despite the heat. The court then resumes Dr. Cotton's cross-examination by Mr. Neufeld.
1 THE COURT:

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Please be seated. Let the record reflect that we've been rejoined by all the members of our jury panel. Ladies and gentlemen, apparently what we experienced this morning at about 9:30 was a power surge. And our air conditioning and heating is controlled by a single power plant here downtown. Apparently when that power surge hit our--the county power plant, there is a computer that immediately shuts the equipment down in the event of a power surge, and there's a start-up procedure that has to be gone through. And for those of you familiar with our power plant, we have some rather large turbines over there that have to be started up again. So that's what's happened. So hopefully we can survive the rest of the morning. I'm told it's back on line manually. So we'll start cooling slowly, but since it's a short day, we'll just slog through it. All right. Dr. Cotton. Good morning again. And, Mr. Neufeld, you may continue with your cross-examination.
