Jury instructions

Date: Friday, June 30, 1995 • Utterances: 8
Judge Ito closes court for the July 4th holiday weekend, first pausing to publicly thank Jennifer Fitzpatrick, the operator of the courtroom's media display system ('whizbang'), who is departing to return to her law firm in New Orleans. He then delivers standard jury admonitions and dismisses the court until Wednesday, July 5, 1995.
1 THE COURT:

All right. All right. Ladies and gentlemen, before we take our recess for the day, I just wanted to take this opportunity to call to your attention Miss Jennifer Fitzpatrick who is back in the back there. She's been the operator of our whizbang--what we call the whizbang system. This is our fancy media system. And as you know, so far this trial in over five months or six months, we've only had one foul-up, and that was when the power died, and that wasn't her fault. And she is going to be returning to her law firm of Doiche, Kerrigan and Stiles in the Big Easy. She's from New Orleans, and she will be returning there. And Miss Fitzpatrick, I want to on behalf of the parties in the Court thank you for your service.

2 (Applause.)
3 THE COURT:

All right. Ladies and gentlemen--Mr. Deedrick, you can step down. Ladies and gentlemen, please remember all my admonitions to you; don't discuss the case amongst yourselves, form any opinions about the case, conduct any deliberations until the matter has been submitted to you, don't get burned by any fireworks, don't let anybody communicate with you. Have a nice holiday weekend. All right. We'll stand in recess--counsel, we have some other--I have some other matters to attend to Monday morning. We'll stand in recess until--excuse me--Wednesday morning 10:30. All right. Thank you, counsel.

Key Quotes (2)

Lance A. Ito
so far this trial in over five months or six months, we've only had one foul-up, and that was when the power died, and that wasn't her fault.
Ito's rare moment of levity and public praise; also an implicit acknowledgment of how technically complex and long this trial had become.
Lance A. Ito
don't get burned by any fireworks
A small holiday-weekend joke woven into the standard admonitions — one of Ito's characteristically dry asides.

Light Moments (2)

Lance A. Ito
Judge Ito publicly praises departing court tech Jennifer Fitzpatrick, calling the media system the 'whizbang,' prompting applause from those present.
Lance A. Ito
Ito inserts 'don't get burned by any fireworks' into the boilerplate jury admonitions as a nod to the July 4th weekend.
