Jury instructions and scheduling

Date: Friday, June 16, 1995 • Utterances: 14
With only 12 minutes left in the session, Darden informed the court that the next witness, Mr. Acosta, would take 15 minutes to retrieve via elevator. Judge Ito dismissed the jury for the weekend, reminding them of his standard admonitions, and adjourned until Monday June 19th at 9:00 A.M. Cochran requested a brief unreported bench conference before the recess.
1 MR. DARDEN:

May--we have 12 minutes, your Honor. Do you want to proceed with another witness?

2 THE COURT:

Who do you have available?

3 MR. COCHRAN:

I didn't hear the question.

4 THE COURT:

I was asking who the next witness is.

5 MR. DARDEN:

I'm informed that the witness is upstairs. It's Mr. Acosta. With our elevator system, it will take 15 minutes to get him down here though.

6 THE COURT:

All right. Ladies and gentlemen, may have been a short day, but it was interesting. All right. We're going to take our recess for the morning session. Please remember all my admonitions to you; don't discuss the case amongst yourselves, don't form any opinions about the case, don't conduct any deliberations until the matter has been submitted to you, don't allow anybody to communicate with you with regard to the case. Have a pleasant weekend. See you Monday morning, 9:00 A.M. all right.

Key Quotes (2)

Christopher Darden
With our elevator system, it will take 15 minutes to get him down here though.
Mundane logistical detail that ends the day — the building's elevator effectively determines the trial's schedule.
Lance A. Ito
Ladies and gentlemen, may have been a short day, but it was interesting.
Ito's understated aside to the jury about the day's testimony — likely a dry reference to the glove-fitting drama of the session.

Light Moments (1)
