Recess and adjournment

Date: Wednesday, July 19, 1995 • Utterances: 4
Judge Ito adjourns the afternoon session, ordering witness Willie Ford to return the next morning. He delivers standard jury admonitions, then pauses to announce the death of Deputy Geuvjehizian — a bailiff known affectionately as 'Deputy G12' — who had been shot and killed the previous day while investigating a prowler at his neighbor's home. The department stood in recess in his honor.
1 THE COURT:

All right. All right. Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to take our recess for the afternoon. Mr. Ford, you may step down. You are ordered to return, sir, tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock.

2 MR. FORD:

Thank you.

3 THE COURT:

All right. All right. Ladies and gentlemen, please remember all of my admonitions to you; don't discuss the case amongst yourselves, don't form any opinions about the case, don't conduct any deliberations until the matter has been submitted to you. Also, do not allow anybody to communicate with you with regard to the case. I understand that you were advised earlier today that one of our bailiffs, one of our deputy sheriff's who had served with us, Deputy Geuvjehizian, was unfortunately shot and killed yesterday. He went to investigate a prowler at his next-door neighbor's home and was unfortunately shot and killed. And this afternoon--as we affectionately knew him, Deputy G12. And Department 103 will stand in recess this afternoon in his honor. Thank you.
